Eat Steel & Spit Rivets Norfolk Southern Employees Reflect on 30 Years of Change, Challenge, and Achievement: 137 pages, full color book published by Norfolk Southern
Preface:
A Word About NS Culture "Eat Steel & Spit Rivets." What a great title for a book, right?
It was suggested by a Norfolk Southern employee, just as this book was written by NS employees. It's as good a description as any of our corporate culture, because railroading is hard and important work, and it takes a special breed of people to get it done right.
Originally this preface was going to be a treatise on the role that corporate culture historically has played on the railroad. We were going to talk about old people, old practices, and old stories. it would have been a weighty tome. After all, Norfolk Southern dates to 1827, and we count hundreds of railroads as our predecessors. No doubt each had its own distinct corporate culture: just cataloging the key culture changes that have taken place since the modern NS came onto the scene on June 11, 1982, would spell death for many trees and editors.
The important thing is to focus on where our culture is today - and on where we want it to be tomorrow. With that in mind, we hope you will enjoy this collection of thoughts contributed by employees from around the NS system. They have written aabout what our SPIRIT values - safety, performance, integrity, respect, innovation, teamwork - mean to them, our communities, and customers. we especially call you attention to the reports from Wich Moorman and David Goode, who as our current and our previous CEOs. respectively, have done so much to set the tone and direction of the powerful culture from which we benefit today.
As you read this book, you will see that Norfolk Southern's culture is far more than just words on paper. It is something that lives deep inside all the people who proudly call themselves the Thoroughbred of Transportation.
