In text and picutre form, this volume tells the story of Southern's passenger trains, beginning in 1939 and concluding with the last run of the SOUTHERN CRESCENT  in February 1979.  It is divided into three chapters that cover the years 1940-1960, 1961-1970, 1971-1979. Within those chapters, we will review the operations of some of Southern's best known trains, including the CRESCENT, ROYAL PALM, TENNESSEAN, PELICAN, BIRMINGHAM SPECIAL and KANSAS CITY-FLORIDA SPECIAL. We'll also take abrief look at competitors such as Seaboard and Louisville & Nashville, and neighboring roads like Frisco, Illinois Central and Central of Georgia.
