Train Rides

Our 25-minute train ride, which offers a narrated tour of the 60-acre site, is pulled by an antique diesel engine. The train runs on a seasonal schedule.  Check below to see when train rides are available..

March 2 through June 4
Thursday-Friday, 10:30, 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m.
Saturdays, 10:30, 11:30 am, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m

Sundays, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday, June 4 through September 3
Tuesday-Saturday, 10:30, 11:30 am, 1:30 and 2:30 pm

September 7 through December 31*

*The museum's regular passenger train will run ONLY at 12:30 and 1:30pm on days when THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride is scheduled.  The museum will be closed Dec. 23-26 in observance of the Christmas holiday.

*Because of a change in North Carolina’s tax laws--N.C. General Statute § 105-164.4(a)(10)--beginning Jan. 1, 2015, the N.C. Transportation Museum will begin charging 7% sales tax on admissions, programs, and special events. The tax applied consists of the current state sales tax of 4.75% and the current Rowan County tax of 2.25%


Diesel Cab Rides - Ride with the engineer!
  • $25 per person seated rider.  $15 for standing riders. (includes site admission) 
  • Seats must be filled before standing rides are sold.
  • Number of available tickets depends on locomotive. 
  • Available on a first-come, first-served basis. Not available during special events.
  • Engineer has full descretion regarding number of tickets sold and availability.
  • Riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • The cab can be noisy and may disturb very young riders
