Virginia Autumn Flyer train excursion from Spencer, NC to Charlottesville, Va.
Two, day-long trips offered on Nov. 3 and 4

SPENCER, N.C. — All aboard for two fun-filled train excursions from Spencer, NC to Charlottesville, Va. and back each day, Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 4. The Virginia Autumn Flyer, presented by the N.C. Transportation Museum Foundation and the Watauga Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, offers rare daylight trips through the rolling hills of the Carolinas and the Western part of Central Virginia, using Amtrak and vintage rail equipment.

The excursions depart at 7 a.m. each day from the N.C. Transportation Museum, and will travel a railroad line that crests legendary White Oak Mountain, and passed the Dan, Roanoke and James Rivers, before arriving in Charlottesville, Va. at 12:30 p.m. Home of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville is full of history, and a short walk to the historic downtown mall offers unique shopping and dining opportunities. The train will depart Charlottesville at 2:30 p.m. and arrive back in Spencer at 8 p.m.

Onboard services include two types of first class accommodations: Dome and Premium, and coach seating. First class fare includes continental breakfast and newspapers on the way to Charlottesville, along with dinner on the return trip served in vintage lounge and dining cars.

Passengers in the First Class Dome section can sit on the second level of a rail car, surrounded by glass windows, offering a panoramic view of the passing scenery. Dome tickets are on sale for $240 per person.

In the First Class Premium section, passengers will sit on the first level of a rail car and receive the same luxury and service as passengers with Dome seating. Premium tickets are $215 per person.

Coach seating, featuring wide windows, adjustable seats and convenient access to the commissary car, are also available for $125 per person. All cars feature air conditioning, heat and rest rooms.

Seating is assigned by boarding pass. Boarding passes will be exchanged for prepaid tickets on the day of the trip beginning at 6 a.m., and ending 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Passenger preferences for seating toward the front, middle, or rear of the train will be honored on an as-available basis. Onboard snacks and souvenirs will be available throughout the train ride, and small coolers or picnic baskets are allowed if stored in the racks above the seats.

Tickets are required for everyone who will occupy a seat. Children under three years old who will not occupy a seat are free. Tickets can be purchased online at www.nctrans.org , by phone at

704-636-2889 ext. 232, or in person at the N.C. Transportation Museum.
